Quick finder: what does your family need?
Strong all-round access: National Museum Cardiff.
Free history + Changing Places: St Fagans.
Hands-on indoor day: Techniquest.
Accessible Cardiff Bay culture: Wales Millennium Centre or the Senedd.
Nature + visitor centre: Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs.
Outdoor mobility support: Parc Cefn Onn with pre-booked Tramper.
City-centre shopping / mobility hire: St David’s.
Accessible swimming: Eastern Leisure Centre or STAR Hub.
Historic attraction with caveats: Cardiff Castle.
Access confidence tags
GREEN: strong access information and useful facilities; still check your exact route.
AMBER: important areas are accessible, but historic fabric, steep ground or individual exhibits can limit the visit.
PURPLE: particularly useful sensory / neurodivergent support such as visual stories, sensory bags, calm spaces or quieter times.
BLUE: confirmed Changing Places or a strong accessible-toilet option.
Before setting off: check four things in this order: parking/drop-off → entrance and route → exact toilet/Changing Places location → quiet place or easy exit.

What “Accessible” Actually Needs to Tell You
A wheelchair symbol on its own is not enough. These practical details usually decide whether a family can enjoy the day together:
- Step-free route: does level/ramped access reach the actual activity, not just reception?
- Surfaces & slopes: cobbles, gravel, grass, tactile flooring and gradients can matter as much as steps.
- Toilets: a standard accessible toilet is not the same as a Changing Places toilet.
- Parking / drop-off: distance, gradient and safe unloading matter as well as the number of Blue Badge bays.
- Mobility equipment: wheelchairs, scooters, Trampers and site buggies can transform a visit.
- Sensory load: noise, lighting, queues, security checks, crowds and hand dryers can all affect how manageable a place feels.
- Rest & exit: seating, calm space and the ability to leave quickly can be more important than doing every attraction.
Changing Places ≠ standard accessible toilet. Changing Places normally offer much more space, an adult-sized changing bench and a hoist. Check opening hours and whether a RADAR key or staff access is required.
City Centre: Museums, Castle & Shopping
National Museum Cardiff
GREEN · Free general entry · Step-free route · Blue Badge parking · Changing Places · Wheelchair loan
National Museum Cardiff accessibility →
One of the strongest lower-stress city-centre choices when mobility is a priority. Amgueddfa Cymru lists an accessible front walkway, lifts (some staff-operated), four manual wheelchairs, mobile seating sticks, free Blue Badge parking in the museum car park and a Level 1 Changing Places facility accessed with a RADAR key from the welcome desk.
Caveat: some natural-history areas include uneven or tactile floor levels.
Museum of Cardiff
GREEN / PURPLE · Free · Lift · Accessible toilet · Sensory map · Visual story · Sensory trolley
A compact option with wide routes in the main galleries and useful pre-visit ALN resources.
Caveat: the Cardiff in Context gallery has low light and repeating audio, and the Tiled Corridor has a small step with no ramp.
Cardiff Castle
AMBER · Level access to Visitor Centre / grounds · Partial historic access · No on-site parking
The Visitor Centre, Firing Line museum, café, shop, grounds, Education Centre and Undercroft are accessible. The Castle Apartments and Norman Keep are not wheelchair accessible. The grounds are mostly flat but include a cobbled path.
St David’s Cardiff
GREEN / PURPLE · Wheelchair & scooter hire · Accessible toilets · Changing Places · Sensory support
St David’s access and mobility →
St David’s offers free mobility-equipment hire; request it in advance (St David’s says up to 48 hours’ notice). It also offers sensory backpacks, Hidden Disability Sunflower support and calmer-shopping measures. The Changing Places facility is in the Eastside restaurant/toilet area.
St Fagans: Excellent Facilities, but Choose Your Route
GREEN / AMBER · Free entry · Accessible parking · 2 Changing Places · Wheelchair loan · Site buggy · Quieter-time guidance
St Fagans accessibility →
St Fagans combines strong facilities with a large historic site, so route choice matters.
What works well
- Accessible parking near the main entrance; Blue Badge holders park free.
- Two lifts in the main building.
- Two Changing Places facilities: main entrance building and Gweithdy.
- Manual wheelchairs free on a first-come basis.
- Mobility scooters welcome.
- Pre-bookable site buggy — book at least two weeks ahead.
- Accessible toilets around the site.
Where the challenge is
- The Castle side is steep in places.
- Uneven outdoor surfaces and historic thresholds occur.
- Some historic buildings cannot match the access of modern buildings.
- Light, temperature, fires and smells vary inside historic buildings.
Sensory / low-demand planning: St Fagans has a visual story and says weekdays in term time after 3pm are generally quieter.
A realistic accessible visit: park near entrance → check Changing Places location → do entrance galleries → choose ONE outdoor cluster → café/rest → decide whether to continue.
Cardiff Bay: Some of the City’s Strongest Access Options
Techniquest
GREEN / PURPLE · Level access · Lifts · Sensory bags · Quiet Pod · Accessible toilets · Essential carer free
Techniquest access and facilities →
Techniquest lists level access, lifts, sensory bags (sensory map, visual story, ear defenders, sunglasses and sensory toys; £20 refundable deposit) and The Pod, a small private room on the ground floor.
Caveat: only one wheelchair user can be accommodated per Planetarium show. One accessible parking bay is bookable on site (call 029 2047 5475 to reserve it); nearby Mermaid Quay and Havannah Street provide additional accessible parking options.
Wales Millennium Centre
GREEN / BLUE · Level access · Lifts · Accessible performance seating · Changing Places · Bookable accessible parking
Wales Millennium Centre access →
Wales Millennium Centre lists step-free movement, accessible toilets, a ground-floor Changing Places toilet and bookable accessible parking.
The Senedd
GREEN / BLUE · Ramp/lift access · Changing Places · Accessible parking by prior arrangement · Hearing loops
Plan your Senedd visit →
The Senedd lists accessible toilets, Changing Places with adult bench and hoist, hearing loops and accessible parking by prior arrangement.
Sensory note: all visitors go through security. If queues, alarms or scanning equipment are difficult, contact the visitor team in advance.
Cardiff Bay Barrage
GREEN · Flat / step-free · Free · Accessible toilets · Flexible distance
A strong outdoor option because the route is broad, flat and easy to shorten by turning back.
North Cardiff & Outdoor Access
Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs
GREEN · Level visitor centre · Automatic entrance · Lift · Accessible toilets · Hearing loop
One of the easier outdoor destinations for arrival and facilities.
Caveat: the café can become busy and loud. Patio seating is often calmer, but there is no designated quiet space.
Parc Cefn Onn + Tramper Service
AMBER → GREEN with Tramper · All-terrain mobility scooters · Sloping park
The standout feature is bookable Countryside Mobility Tramper hire, which can open up both upper and lower parts of the park for people who would otherwise struggle with the gradients.
Good to know: Tramper hire needs advance booking and scheme safety requirements apply. Check with Countryside Mobility that the Tramper service is running before you travel.
Outdoor rule: a park can have an accessible toilet but still have steep, muddy or uneven paths. Record the exact manageable route, not just “accessible”.
Accessible Swimming & Active Family Sessions
For swimming, check changing, pool entry, hoists/pool pods, disabled parking and whether staff assistance must be arranged.
Eastern Leisure Centre
Wheelchair adapted; disabled toilet; accessible changing; lift; poolside hoist/facilities; 15 free disabled parking spaces.
Eastern Leisure Centre →
STAR Hub
Wheelchair adapted; ramp/lift; accessible changing; 25m pool with poolside hoist; 5 disabled spaces.
STAR Hub →
Fairwater Leisure Centre
Wheelchair adapted; disabled toilet; ramp; lift; poolside hoist; 3 disabled spaces. Better says a programme of internal improvement works began in the week of 24 August 2026, so check which facilities are open before you visit.
Fairwater Leisure Centre →
Pentwyn Leisure Centre
Ramp access, disabled toilet and 7 disabled spaces. A new pool with two movable floors and adjustable depth is now open.
Pentwyn Leisure Centre →
Before booking
- Ask whether the hoist/pool pod is available for your actual session.
- Check whether you need a Changing Places facility rather than ordinary accessible changing.
- Check the parking-to-reception and changing-to-pool routes.
- If quieter water time matters, ask which sessions are usually least busy and whether music, inflatables or whistles are used.

Keep the finder, not just a screenshot. Changing Places registrations and opening hours can change, so the live finder should remain the source of truth. Find a Changing Places toilet →

Sensory & Neurodivergent Planning
Sensory accessibility is often about predictability: knowing what the entrance feels like, where noise comes from, whether there is a quieter space and how to leave early if needed.
Techniquest: sensory bags, sensory map, visual story, ear defenders, quiet Pod and relaxed sessions; interactive galleries can be busy/noisy.
Museum of Cardiff: sensory trolley, sensory map, visual story and ALN relaxed events; watch for low light/audio in the main gallery.
St Fagans: visual story and quieter-time guidance; large site with changing light, temperature, smells and uneven paths.
St David’s: sensory backpacks, Hidden Disability Sunflower support and calmer-shopping measures; busy periods can still be noisy.
National Museum Cardiff: visual story, lots of seating and clear access information; tactile/uneven flooring in some areas.
Senedd: contactable visitor team and hearing loops; security screening can change the feel of the visit.
Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs: adjustable visitor-centre lighting and calmer patio seating; café can be noisy and there is no designated quiet room.
A simple sensory plan
- Use a visual story/map before leaving home where available.
- Choose one safe base on arrival: quiet room, café corner, bench, foyer or outdoor space.
- Bring familiar regulating items even when a venue offers sensory bags.
- Avoid building the day around a timed show unless the space/exit rules work for your family.
- If security screening is part of the visit, explain it beforehand.
Blue Badge Parking, Mobility Hire & Getting Around
Cardiff Council says Blue Badge holders can use on-street pay-and-display spaces, council car parks and Blue Badge-only bays, and can park for up to 3 hours (with the clock displayed) in resident bays and on single or double yellow lines, unless there is a loading ban. Always check the signs.
Cardiff Council: using a Blue Badge →
City-centre Mobility Buggy
Visit Cardiff runs a free mobility buggy for up to three passengers between two prearranged city-centre locations, Mon–Thu 8am–4pm and Fri 8am–3.30pm (not weekends). Book with the request form.
Visit Cardiff mobility buggy →
Mobility equipment worth knowing about
- St David’s: free wheelchair / mobility-scooter hire; request in advance (up to 48 hours’ notice); equipment stays within the complex.
- National Museum Cardiff: four manual wheelchairs + mobile seating sticks, first come first served.
- St Fagans: manual wheelchairs + site buggy; book the buggy at least two weeks ahead.
- Parc Cefn Onn: Countryside Mobility Tramper hire; advance booking required; check the service is running before you travel.
- Techniquest: one bookable on-site accessible parking bay.
The distance-from-the-car test: accessible parking is only genuinely useful if the distance, gradient and route to the entrance work.
Ready-Made Accessible Family Day Plans
The Easy Rainy-Day One: National Museum Cardiff → café/lunch → home. Strong step-free access + Changing Places + easy to shorten.
The Sensory-Prep One: Museum of Cardiff visual story → short visit → St David’s quiet/food stop.
The Big Free History One: St Fagans entrance galleries → ONE outdoor zone → café.
The Hands-On One: Techniquest → quiet Pod break → short Bay waterfront stop.
The Bay Access One: Senedd → Wales Millennium Centre → short waterfront section.
The Nature + Café One: Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs visitor centre → short path → café.
The Outdoor Mobility One: pre-book Tramper at Parc Cefn Onn → picnic / park.
The Swim One: Eastern Leisure or STAR → accessible changing → family swim.
If the plan stops working
- Skip the second venue. A successful 60-minute outing still counts.
- Use the nearest calm/seated space before deciding whether to continue.
- If a lift, toilet or route is unexpectedly unavailable, tell staff what you need rather than improvising around an unsafe route.
- Keep an easy-exit destination in mind: café, car, taxi rank or transport hub.
