Baby’s First Year in Cardiff

A practical Cardiff Mums guide to newborn life, feeding support, baby classes, swimming, parent friendships, firsts and the first birthday.

Newborn → 3 months → 6 months → 9 months → first birthday · Checked September 2026

Baby’s first year, without the pressure to do everything

This guide starts once baby is here and follows the first year. It is designed around the everyday questions: where can I get feeding help? How do I contact my health visitor? Where can I meet other parents? Which classes take tiny babies? Where can we swim, try a sling, have a first haircut or celebrate turning one?

You do not need to do everything. One class you enjoy, one place you feel comfortable meeting a friend, and knowing where to get help is plenty. The best first-year routine is the one that works for your baby and your family.

Seren specialist breastfeeding team: seren.cav@wales.nhs.uk

Introducing Solid Foods

Flying Start’s dietetic resources cover starting solids, textures, allergens, cups and moving towards family meals. Your health visitor is the best local contact if you are unsure whether baby is ready or you have concerns about feeding, growth or development.

Medical note: this guide is general information and does not replace individual advice. If baby is very sleepy and hard to wake for feeds, has noticeably fewer wet nappies, is struggling to breathe, seems seriously unwell, or you are worried about dehydration or poor feeding, seek medical advice promptly. NHS 111 Wales can be reached on 111 when it is not a 999 emergency.

Meet Other Parents

NCT Cardiff, Caerphilly & Gwent

Cardiff Family Advice & Support

A useful first contact if you want a parent group but do not know what is running in your area. Advisors can signpost to Cardiff Parenting, Flying Start where eligible, and other local family services. Current contact: 03000 133 133.

Cardiff Hubs & Libraries

Free library membership and changing local programmes including baby/toddler rhymes, stories and community groups. Check the live events listings for what is running near you.

Going to a baby group alone? Aim to arrive close to the start time, give yourself permission to leave early, and use one easy opener: “How old is your little one?” Most people are there for exactly the same reason — to get out of the house and meet someone.

Sling Libraries & Babywearing

Carry Me Close Sling Library offers hire, drop-ins, one-to-one appointments and babywearing advice around Cardiff and South Wales. Cardiff & Caerphilly NCT Sling Library is volunteer-run and offers carrier hire. Try before you buy where possible and ask for help with fit, baby’s airway, positioning and age/weight suitability.

Swimming

Baby and preschool swimming around Cardiff with age-based classes. The guide lists Cardiff venues including Novotel Cardiff Centre, Everlast Fitness Cardiff and Fitzalan High School; availability differs by class and day.

Cwac Cwac’s Swimming Club

From 3 months · Caerphilly
Family-run swim school with Baby Hatchlings for 3–12 months and Little Ducklings from 12 months, combining water confidence, play and parent participation.

First swim checklist: ask about pool temperature, double-nappy rules, changing space, buggy storage and whether spectators can attend. Pack more time than you think you need — changing a baby after swimming is often the hardest part of the outing.

Baby-Friendly Places

Tyfu Play — Whitchurch

A parent-created play café with role play, soft play and café seating. Newborns attending with a paying sibling were free when the source guide was checked.

Zone Play Cardiff

Indoor soft play with a dedicated baby area, café, seating and free parking. Useful for meeting another parent when babies are becoming more mobile.

Mambo Play Cardiff

Large play centre with a secure baby section for children up to one plus café facilities. More stimulating than a quiet café, so it may suit older/mobile babies better than tiny newborns.

Senedd Café — Cardiff Bay

A family-friendly café with a stated breastfeeding-friendly welcome, useful to combine with a buggy walk around Cardiff Bay.

Waterloo Tea — Whitchurch Road

A spacious neighbourhood teahouse useful for parent meet-ups and coffee. Cardiff Mums has previously had a community babyccino offer here; check the current perk before publishing it elsewhere.

Ground Up Coffee House

Independent community coffee house with daytime opening and babyccinos. Cardiff Mums has an existing member-perk relationship; confirm the current wording before a promotional share.

Firsts & First Birthday

Funky Little Chickens — First Haircut

A children’s salon with a dedicated First Haircut Package that currently includes a certificate and a lock of hair in a keepsake box. Booking is essential.

Peggy’s Pots

A local keepsake option to explore for baby handprints, footprints and seasonal pottery memories.

Other first-year memories: first smile · first swim · first trip to the park · first Christmas/seasonal photo · first tooth · first haircut · hand/footprint keepsake · favourite toy · a photo with grandparents.

Turning One

Baby Sensory Cardiff East advertises baby-focused parties with lights, music, bubbles and sensory play. Tyfu Play offers party bookings in its play-café setting, while Zone Play offers soft-play parties that may suit mobile babies and families with older siblings.

A first birthday does not need to be huge. For a one-year-old, a 60–90 minute celebration around their usual nap and meal routine can be more enjoyable than a long party. Think familiar room, favourite people, simple food, bubbles, music, a sensory basket and time for photos.

Handy First-Year Resources

Cardiff Cloth Nappy Library can help families explore reusable nappies without buying a full kit first. Cwtch Baby Bank supports families with essential baby items; referral arrangements can change, so check the current route. Cardiff Council — Babies & Young Children signposts to maternity support, childcare and financial help.

Baby Outing Checklist

Nappies + wipes + changing mat · spare baby clothes · feeding supplies · muslin/bib · weather layer/rain cover · small toy/teether · sling or buggy · any medicines/medical items · know where the nearest changing or quiet feeding spot is · leave before baby becomes overtired if you need to.

Questions Before Booking a Baby Class

What exact age/stage is it for? Can I feed, change or step out? Is there buggy parking and step-free access? Is there a trial before paying for a term? What happens if baby is ill? Are twins/multiples charged separately? Can another carer attend? How loud or stimulating is the session? Are calmer/smaller sessions available?
