Primary Learning: Reading, English & Maths

Explore Learning Cardiff Thornhill

Ages 4–16 · Thornhill · in-centre / online
Curriculum-aligned English and maths tuition, with entrance-exam and GCSE maths options. Useful for families who prefer a structured centre rather than finding an individual tutor.

Kip McGrath Cardiff North

Primary–secondary · Llanishen
English, maths, reading, spelling and EAL support. The source guide notes the centre is led by a specialist primary and ALN teacher.

Kumon Cardiff Centres

Maths & English · multiple Cardiff areas
Individualised skills programmes focused on fluency, independent learning and regular practice. Kumon does not directly follow the school curriculum, so it may suit a different need from exam-specific tuition.

Inspire Tuition

Maths & English · Cardiff
Qualified-teacher-led support across different ages and abilities, including maths through GCSE and A level.

Axis Cardiff Tuition Centre

Ages 6–18 · city centre
Small-group tuition in English and maths from KS1 through GCSE, with science and exam-preparation options.

GCSE, A Level & Exam Support

The Academic Coach

GCSE & A level · Cardiff / online
Small-group and online tuition with an exam-preparation focus, including revision and summer bootcamps.

Seven Education

WJEC-aligned · online · Wales-wide
Specialist Maths and English group tuition alongside alternative online education provision. The source guide notes experience with EOTAS and ALN learners and a smaller, calmer learning model.

Cardiff & Vale Tutors

KS1–A level / IB · in person / online
A broad tutoring agency covering core subjects, less-common subjects, entrance exams, Functional Skills, languages and specialist learning support.

Alchemy Tuition

GCSE / IGCSE / A level science · online
Specialist science tuition with an exam-focused approach and examiner insight.

Cardiff Maths Tutor

GCSE / AS / A level maths
A focused option where maths is the specific pressure point, with WJEC experience highlighted by the provider.

Welsh-Medium & Bilingual Learning

Rhagori

Welsh-medium · KS3 / GCSE / A level · Cardiff
Welsh-medium tutoring and revision for secondary learners in small groups.

Cardiff & Vale Tutors — Welsh-Medium Support

Offers Welsh first- and second-language tuition as well as maths and science through the medium of Welsh.

Welsh-medium tip: say exactly what you need when enquiring, for example “Maths through Welsh”, “GCSE Cymraeg” or “Welsh second-language support”. A tutor who teaches Welsh as a subject is not necessarily a tutor who teaches another subject through Welsh.

Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, SpLD & Specialist Learning Support

Develop Us

SpLD / dyslexia / dyscalculia · Cardiff / online
Specialist assessment, teaching, mentoring and study-skills support for children and adults.

TG Dyslexia / Tomorrow’s Generation

Specialist dyslexia support · Lisvane
Small-group specialist provision from a registered charity/non-profit.

Dyslexia Cardiff

Diagnostic assessment · children & adults
An assessment and advice service rather than a general tutoring centre. A private diagnostic assessment is different from school ALN support.

Leg-Up Education

Dyslexia / learning barriers · Cardiff / online
Screening, diagnostic assessment, exam-access-arrangement assessment, parent advice and learning support.

Cardiff & Vale Tutors — Specialist Tuition

The source guide notes specialist dyslexia and dyscalculia tuition, including primary provision in English and Welsh and ALN/SEN-trained tutors.

Home Education & Alternative Learning

Cardiff Council — Elective Home Education

Official local guidance on Cardiff’s home-education process and the role of the EHE officer. The source guide stresses that elective home education and EOTAS are different: EHE is a parental choice and responsibility; EOTAS is arranged by a local authority.

Seven Education — Alternative Online Provision

Structured online English and maths education for learners who may be out of school temporarily, awaiting placement or better suited to a smaller/calmer model.

Cardiff & Vale Tutors — Home Education

Subject tuition for home-educated learners, including maths, English, science, GCSE and Functional Skills routes.

Coding, STEM & Learning Beyond School

Code Ninjas Cardiff

Ages 5–14 · Roath / Ipswich Road
Game-based coding, robotics and digital-literacy programmes using practical, interest-led learning. This is enrichment rather than curriculum tutoring, but it can be a strong fit for children who engage better through projects and technology.

Free Learning & Revision Resources

Hwb — Power Up

Free · Wales · GCSE / AS / A level
Welsh Government revision and assessment support with links, videos, practical exam advice, wellbeing support and routes into further education and careers.

WJEC Digital & Revision Resources

Free subject resources, question banks, past-paper support and revision materials. For Year 10 from September 2026, use the correct resources for the relevant Made-for-Wales qualification where applicable.

Cardiff Libraries & Hubs

Free library membership, books, eBooks, computers and quiet study spaces. Local learning and homework activities vary through the year.

Before You Pay: Questions Worth Asking

  • What ages, subjects and levels do you teach most often?
  • Are you familiar with my child’s exact curriculum, WJEC qualification and current specification?
  • Are sessions 1:1 or group, and what is the maximum group size?
  • What qualifications and recent teaching/tutoring experience do you have?
  • What safeguarding arrangements and DBS checks are in place?
  • How do you assess the learner’s starting point?
  • How will you decide what to teach each week and show progress?
  • How do you adapt for dyslexia, ADHD, autism, anxiety or other ALN?
  • Can my child try a session or assessment before a long commitment?
  • What are the full costs, including registration, resources, cancellation and notice fees?
  • What would make you tell me your service is not the right fit for my child?

A good tutor should be a good fit, not just a good CV

For many children, feeling safe enough to ask questions and make mistakes matters as much as subject knowledge. If a child is suddenly struggling across several areas, attendance, anxiety, bullying, sleep, sensory needs or confidence may also be part of the picture, so tuition may not be the whole answer.

Tutor red flags

  • Guaranteeing a grade or claiming they can “fix” a learning difficulty.
  • Being vague about who will teach your child, safeguarding or group size.
  • Pressuring you into a long package before meeting or assessing the learner.
  • Using generic resources without asking about specification, tier or language.
  • Not being willing to explain progress, goals or how the approach would change if it is not working.
