Find the thing they actually want to go back to.
Start here: what are they actually into?
Start with age, then interest, then practical fit: travel, timing, cost, trial policy and whether your child wants a structured pathway or simply a fun weekly club. Exact timetables and spaces change frequently, so always check the live booking information before committing.
“I want to dance.” Start with ballet, acro, commercial or lyrical: Cardiff Dance Company, babyballet, Flame or KOKO.
“I want to be on stage.” Drama / musical theatre: Sherman, Forge Drama, PQA, Kinetic or Talent Shack.
“I just want football.” Skills / social / club pathway: Gôl, Football Funatics or local mini/junior clubs.
“I love water.” Learn to swim / skills: Better, Cardiff International Pool, Splash Central or local swim schools.
“I climb everything.” Gymnastics / climbing / freerunning: Somersault, Cardiff Olympic, Flashpoint or Fluidity.
“I want to make things.” Art / craft: Beth Morris, The Art Workshop or Llanover Hall.
“I love computers.” Coding / robotics / STEM: Code Ninjas and Techniquest programmes/camps.
“I need something calmer.” Music / art / small-group creative: Forte, Cardiff and Vale Music Service or art clubs.
“I want a belt!” Martial arts: Phoenix Martial Arts, Karate Kids or Taekwondo clubs.
Trial-class rule: whenever possible, try before committing to a full term. Ask what happens if the class is not the right fit, whether there is a joining fee or uniform cost, and how much notice is required to leave.

For confidence, acting, singing, writing and children who live for a stage.
Sherman Theatre — Young People
Cathays · performance + writing
Best for young people who want professional-theatre-led opportunities. Options include Sherman Sherbets (Reception–Year 3), Sherman Youth Theatre (ages 8–18) and Introduction to Playwriting (ages 15–18), alongside education workshops.

Cardiff East & Cardiff West · juniors + seniors
Drama, singing, dancing and productions, with a Seniors class for school years 7–11.
More performing-arts leads
Pauline Quirke Academy Cardiff · Kinetic Theatre School · The Talent Shack · JustOne Theatre Arts.
Good question to ask: is the emphasis confidence/fun, performance, exams or professional-style training? Two drama schools can feel completely different even when the timetable looks similar.
Football, Rugby & Team Sport
Gôl Cardiff — Saturday Soccer Schools
Lawrenny Avenue · ages 4–11 · boys & girls
Structured football for beginners and regular players without needing to join a team immediately. Sessions use FAW-qualified coaches, are open to all abilities and can be delivered in English or Welsh.
Cardiff Rugby Camps & Local Mini/Junior Clubs
Cardiff Arms Park + regional clubs
Cardiff Rugby runs school-holiday camps for girls and boys, while local affiliated clubs provide weekly mini and junior pathways. For a regular club, ask about training days, girls/mixed provision and trial sessions.
Other team-sport routes
Football Funatics Cardiff · Cardiff Met Junior Athletics · Urdd sport · local hockey, basketball and netball clubs.
Welsh-medium win: Gôl’s Saturday soccer schools can switch between English and Welsh, and the Urdd offers a broader Welsh-medium sports pathway.
Swimming
Cardiff Council / Better Learn to Swim
Multiple Cardiff leisure centres
A mainstream staged learn-to-swim route close to home. English-medium lessons run at Better leisure centres. For Welsh-medium lessons, ask the Urdd about current learn-to-swim options near you.
Other swim-school leads
Splash Central · Cardiff International Pool & Gym · Sink Or Swim Swimming School · Cardiff Learn To Swim Academy · SwimReady Swim School.
Ask before you pay: class size · teacher in/out of water · viewing rules · make-up lessons · sibling timing · parking · SEND adjustments · whether goggles/float aids are supplied.
Gymnastics, Climbing & Freerunning
Flashpoint Cardiff Kids Clubs
Penarth Road · youth tasters and regular clubs
For children who enjoy climbing, problem solving and non-team sport. Tasters are for ages 7–15, and regular youth clubs are split into younger and older groups.
Gymnastics Clubs
Multiple Cardiff venues · preschool to competitive
Key leads include Somersault, Cardiff Olympic Gymnastics, Capital Academy of Gymnastics and EA Gymnastics. Waiting lists can be common, so ask about recreational versus squad pathways and trial availability.
Fluidity Freerun Academy
A strong option for children and teens who prefer parkour-style movement to traditional gymnastics, including teen classes and mixed-ability routes.
Why this category matters: some children want physical challenge without matches or a team environment.
Martial Arts
Phoenix Martial Arts
Canton / Dinas Powys / Penarth · Little Dragons 4–7
Taekwon-Do, kickboxing and younger-child provision. The school says it adapts tuition because students learn differently.
Other Cardiff martial-arts leads
Karate Kids Cardiff · Cardiff Taekwondo Academy · Master Lawes Family Martial Arts · Cardiff Martial Arts Academy.
Cost check: do not compare only the weekly fee. Ask about joining fees, uniform, gloves/pads, grading, licences/insurance, competitions and notice to leave.
Music
Cardiff and Vale Music Service
Cardiff & Vale · tuition + ensembles
Instrument tuition, instrument borrowing and groups from beginners to advanced young musicians.
Forte School of Music Cardiff
Danescourt · babies through keyboard learners
Early-years music alongside structured keyboard/piano routes. Free taster lessons are currently advertised.
Art, Craft & Creative Clubs

More art leads
The Art Workshop, Rhiwbina · Llanover Hall Arts Centre · Little Tree Studio · Cardiff Pottery Workshops.
Creative-club advantage: art can be a particularly good social route for children who dislike loud sports halls or competitive activities because conversation can happen alongside a shared task.
Coding, Robotics & STEM
Code Ninjas Cardiff
Ipswich Road · ages 5–14
Programming, robotics and digital literacy through game-based projects. Programmes cover Scratch, JavaScript, Python and robotics, with AI/STEM camps and after-school sessions.
STEM extras
Techniquest workshops and holiday STEM programmes · school/community coding clubs · rotating robotics and AI holiday camps.
Tech that isn’t just gaming: coding · robotics · game design · engineering · science clubs.
More Sports & Specialist Clubs
Athletics: Cardiff Met Junior Athletics · Cardiff AAC Academy.
Climbing: Flashpoint · Boulders.
Fencing: Cardiff Academy of Fencing.
Freerunning: Fluidity Freerun Academy.
Cycling: Pedal Power / local cycling clubs.
Skating / scooters: RampWorld / local skate programmes.
Welsh-medium sport: Urdd.
Holiday sport: Cardiff Rugby · Gôl · leisure centres.
This section matters: a child who has “tried football and dance” has not run out of hobbies. Cardiff has a much wider range once you search by the kind of experience they like: individual challenge, creative focus, speed, performance, animals, water, tech or outdoor adventure.
Welsh-Medium, SEND / ALN & Inclusive Routes
Welsh-medium
The Urdd offers a broad Welsh-medium pathway spanning sport, clubs, arts and competitions. Gôl’s Saturday soccer schools can also be delivered in English or Welsh.
SEND / ALN
Contact providers directly to discuss your child’s needs and any adjustments before booking. Phoenix Martial Arts, for example, says it tailors tuition because each student learns differently.
Do not rely on one vague “inclusive” tick. Ask what is actually known: quieter sessions, small groups, coach experience, step-free access, carer allowed, adaptive equipment, visual support or “contact to discuss”.
How to Choose a Class Without Wasting a Term’s Fees
- Can we trial first? The child may like the idea more than the actual class.
- What is the full cost? Include joining fees, kit, exams, grading, shows and competitions.
- What is the cancellation policy? Some providers need a full month or term’s notice.
- How big is the group? This affects confidence, noise level and coach attention.
- Is it fun, performance or competition led? Match the culture to the child, not just the activity.
- Can parents stay/watch? Important for anxious children and practical planning.
- How are SEND/ALN needs handled? Ask for concrete adjustments, not generic reassurance.
- What happens as they get older? Useful if your child wants progression, teams, exams or qualifications.
The best class is the repeatable one
A brilliant class 35 minutes away at an impossible time can fail faster than a very good class five minutes away that fits family life. Location and timetable are part of quality.
Cardiff Mums note: inclusion in this guide is for discovery and directory purposes and is not automatically an endorsement. Weekly classes change frequently, so age bands, term dates, prices, trial offers and availability should always be re-checked.
