What belongs in this guide?

Experiences where the grown-up and child genuinely share the activity — not just a children’s class with a parent watching from the side. Think pottery wheels, family paddles, baking, toddler dance, afternoon tea, creative workshops, theatre trips and portraits together.

Pick by age or stage

Baby / under 2: parent-and-baby fitness, sensory outings, keepsake hand/footprints, photography and relaxed family theatre. Check feeding/changing space, buggy access and noise.

Toddlers / preschool: parent-toddler gymnastics, bilingual dance, cooking Minis, pottery painting/handprints and café dates. Check whether the adult joins in and whether sessions are PAYG or block-booked.

Primary age: pottery throwing, family kayak/rafting, cooking, craft workshops, theatre and paddleboarding. Check minimum age/height and adult ticket requirements.

Tweens & teens: jewellery making, SUP, kayaking, spa/pamper, workshops, live theatre and photography. Check under-18 supervision and treatment age policies.

Make Something Together

Cardiff Pottery Workshops

Llandough · age 6+
One of the clearest true parent-and-child experiences in the city. The source guide highlights a one-hour Family Ceramics throwing session where one adult and one child take turns on the wheel and make a bowl together. The September 2026 guide listed £40 per adult-and-child pair, plus make-and-paint and seasonal family sessions.

Good to know: finished work is fired and glazed for later collection, so check current collection times.

Peggy’s Pots

Canton + Goodsheds Barry · all-age creative option
Pottery painting, clay and hand/footprint keepsakes. A good choice for mixed ages because everyone can choose something appropriate.

Good to know: particularly nice when you want conversation as much as an activity.

Lark Design Make

Roath · ages vary
A changing craft calendar that has included Parent & Child sessions such as candle making, alongside sewing, crochet, jewellery, mosaics, tufting and other crafts.

Jewellery Making Cardiff

Roath · age 11+
Hands-on jewellery workshops at Cardiff MADE. The source guide states workshops are suitable from age 11 and under-18s attend with a paying adult.

Craft in the Bay / Makers Guild Wales

Cardiff Bay · ages vary
Maker-led workshops that can include jewellery, pottery, printmaking, willow and felt. Check each event because age ranges vary.

Techniquest Special Workshops

Cardiff Bay · ages vary
Periodic ticketed workshops where under-16s attend with an adult. Themes and minimum ages change, so use the current events calendar.

Cook, Bake & Eat Together

Cook Stars Cardiff North & West

Minis age 2–5
Preschool cooking where a grown-up helps. The source guide records Cardiff North & West sessions including Sunday classes at Old Church Rooms, Radyr, plus themed holiday workshops.

Cook Stars Cardiff East

Cyncoed / St Mellons · Minis age 2–5
Parent or guardian attends and helps the child make the recipe. Ask about allergies or intolerances in advance.

Teacups & Cupcakes

Cardiff · special-date idea
The September 2026 guide listed afternoon tea at £22 per adult and £11 for a child’s afternoon tea. Recheck current prices before booking.

The Angel Hotel

Cardiff city centre
A traditional hotel afternoon tea near Cardiff Castle, with children’s menu options. Confirm the current child offering for your date.

Get Active Together

CIWW — Family Kayak / Canoe Taster

Cardiff Bay · age 6+
A shared coached session for parents and children to learn kayaking/canoeing together on the flat-water pool. The September 2026 guide listed £13 per person and a requirement to be confident in/around water.

Good to know: equipment and coaching are provided; check what to bring before travelling.

CIWW — Family Rafting

Cardiff Bay · age 6+
A genuine shared family challenge. The source says pumps are reduced for family sessions so younger children can join, with age 6+ and confidence around water required.

Cardiff Bay Kayaking

Channel View · under-18s with parent/legal guardian
Guided kayak tours through Cardiff Bay and the River Taff, with family rates available on enquiry.

Island SUP Club

Barry Island + local waters
Lessons, youth camps and club activities. First-timers should start with an introductory lesson before joining regular club socials.

Cardiff Central Youth Club — Parent & Toddler Gymnastics

Ocean Park · age 0–5
One-hour parent-and-toddler gym sessions with a qualified coach while the parent remains responsible for the child. The source listed £6 PAYG in September 2026.

Ti a Fi / Flame Dance Studios

Toddler parent-child dance
Bilingual parent-and-toddler dance built around connection, movement and taking part together.

Pamper & Special-Treat Experiences

Safety note: spa and beauty businesses use different minimum ages, treatment rules and consent requirements. Never assume a child can have an adult treatment. Ask directly what is age-appropriate and whether parent and child can be treated together.

Funky Little Chickens

Rumney
Child-focused pamper packages alongside adult hair services, making it possible to build a parent-and-child salon outing subject to appointment availability.

Rose Petals Beauty — Mum & Daughter

Mobile South Wales
Dedicated Mum & Daughter packages where a children’s pamper package can be paired with an adult package.

The Parkgate Hotel — Teen Spa Treatments

Cardiff city centre · age 16+
The source guide records teen-focused spa treatments from age 16 in a dual treatment room with a guardian. Under-18s must be accompanied in the spa by an adult.

Watch, Create Memories & Do Something Special

Sherman Theatre

Cathays
Family shows, Christmas productions and occasional participation opportunities. Check age guidance, relaxed/access performances and running time before booking younger children.

Wales Millennium Centre

Cardiff Bay
Musicals, touring productions, family shows and one-off events across different ages. Look for family, relaxed, captioned, BSL and audio-described listings where useful.

Oliver Jones Photography

Insole Court · family / Mum & Me portraits
A family portrait session can itself become a shared experience as well as a keepsake. Ask exactly which images/products are included and whether there is a later purchasing appointment.

Michelle Gaskell Photography

Llanishen
Relaxed family sessions in a home studio, at home or outdoors, suitable for Mum & Me, parent-and-siblings or an annual family-memory tradition.

Especially Good With Tweens & Teens

  • Make jewellery together — workshops become easier to find from around age 11–12 upward.
  • Try a family kayak, canoe or SUP session — shared challenge without feeling babyish.
  • Book a parent-and-teen portrait session based on their interests rather than a formal family pose.
  • Choose a theatre, musical or live show and make the meal or coffee before/after part of the experience.
  • Look for a workshop where you both leave with something: pottery, ring, print, candle, crochet or seasonal craft.
  • For 16+, check teen spa treatments where a guardian can share the dual treatment room.

Lower-Cost Ways to Make It an Experience

  • Turn a free museum/gallery visit into a “choose one object each and sketch it” date.
  • Use Cardiff library or community craft sessions and add a café treat afterwards.
  • Look for free family events at the Senedd, museums, parks and Cardiff Bay during school holidays.
  • Choose one paid element, such as pottery painting, and pack lunch rather than making the whole day expensive.
  • Create your own photo walk: pick a Cardiff neighbourhood or park, take five photos each and choose one to print.
  • Watch for taster weekends and short workshops at Craft in the Bay rather than committing to a full course.

Making the Experience Work for Your Child

For ALN/SEN, sensory or anxiety needs: ask about noise, lighting, group size, waiting, early arrival, visual demonstrations, breaks, accessible toilets/changing, wheelchair access and whether your child can observe before joining in. A “family” activity is not automatically accessible to every family.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Does the adult genuinely take part, or is the ticket only for the child?
  • Is the price per person, per pair or per project?
  • What is the minimum age, height or swimming ability?
  • Can siblings or a second adult join, and what do they pay?
  • How long is the session and is there a break?
  • What happens if my child becomes overwhelmed or needs to leave?
  • Are materials/equipment included, and do we take the finished item home that day?
  • For food activities, how are allergies/intolerances handled?
  • For water activities, what kit is supplied and what should we bring?
  • For spa/pamper, what treatments are permitted at my child’s age?
  • For photography, what images/products are actually included?
