Start here: choose the experience, then check the exact event
Quick rule for parents: never assume a venue has one fixed age rule. Age limits often change from show to show, especially for concerts. Check the individual event page before buying, and check whether standing tickets have different restrictions from seated tickets.

Best Family Theatre Venues
Wales Millennium Centre
Cardiff Bay · major musicals & family shows
One of Cardiff’s biggest destinations for touring musicals, opera and family entertainment. A strong choice for a big-theatre experience and West End-style touring productions.
Access note: the source guide highlights wheelchair access, Hynt, accessible performances, visual story, Changing Places and a quiet room.
New Theatre Cardiff
City centre · family shows · panto · touring theatre
A traditional city-centre theatre for drama, musicals, dance, comedy, children’s shows and annual pantomime. Check show-specific age guidance.
Sherman Theatre
Cathays · family theatre · Welsh & English
A strong option for home-grown theatre, new writing, touring work and family productions, including English and Welsh-language work.
Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama
Cathays Park · family theatre & concerts
A useful place to find smaller-scale performances, children’s theatre, puppetry, musical theatre, concerts and accessible events.
Chapter Arts Centre
Canton · independent theatre & performance
Best for independent, contemporary and experimental work, plus family events, workshops and accessible programme strands.
Live Music & Big Concerts
Utilita Arena Cardiff
City centre · indoor arena
Cardiff’s main indoor arena for major touring artists, family entertainment and large live shows. The source guide notes that under-14s generally need an accompanying adult over 18, but individual events can have extra restrictions.
Cardiff Castle Concerts
City centre · outdoor summer concerts
The Castle Green hosts large outdoor summer concerts promoted by external organisers. Promoter rules can change each season, so check the individual event FAQ rather than normal Castle visitor information.
Blackweir Live
Blackweir Fields · large outdoor concerts
A festival-style outdoor concert series. Check age rules, access applications, standing conditions, bags, weather and transport before booking.
Principality Stadium
City centre · stadium concerts
For Cardiff’s biggest stadium tours. Family suitability depends entirely on the artist and event, so check promoter age restrictions, standing-floor rules and accessible ticketing.
Cardiff Mums tip: for younger teens, seated tickets can be an easier first stadium-concert experience than a standing floor.
Smaller Live Music Venues & Teen Gigs
Teen gig warning: many smaller Cardiff venues are licensed and use event-specific age limits. A show being advertised at a venue does not automatically mean under-18s can attend.
Tramshed Cardiff
Grangetown · live music & touring acts
A mid-size venue that can work well for older teens depending on the event. Check the individual show’s age restriction.
Cardiff University Students’ Union — The Great Hall / Y Plas
Cathays · touring gigs
One of the strongest places to watch for a teen’s first proper gig because events often publish age restrictions clearly. The source guide notes common live-music rules of 14+, with under-16s accompanied by a ticket-holding adult over 18, although individual shows can differ.
Clwb Ifor Bach
Womanby Street · Welsh & alternative music
Best suited to older teens and adults depending on the event. Check each event’s age restriction carefully.
The Globe
Roath · intimate live music
A smaller live music venue with touring bands and tribute acts. Age restrictions vary by show.
Porter’s
City centre · theatre, comedy & live music
A smaller creative venue for more intimate nights out and emerging artists. Check event listings for age suitability.
Classical Music, Opera & Family Concerts
Welsh National Opera
Wales Millennium Centre + touring
WNO has a dedicated family programme designed to introduce children to opera and orchestral music. A good route into classical music without committing to a full-length adult opera.
BBC Hoddinott Hall
Wales Millennium Centre · orchestral music
Home base for BBC National Orchestra of Wales concerts and other orchestral events. Watch for family concerts, film-music programmes and special orchestral events.
Dora Stoutzker Hall — RWCMD
Cathays Park · classical, jazz & global music
An intimate 350-seat concert hall. The source guide highlights it as a good first classical-concert option because the scale is less intimidating than an arena.
Dance, Musical Theatre & Comedy
For touring West End musicals: start with Wales Millennium Centre, then New Theatre Cardiff.
For locally made or less conventional theatre: Sherman Theatre and Chapter.
For student musical theatre, drama and opera: RWCMD has a busy public programme.
For dance and ballet: check New Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre and RWCMD.
For comedy: New Theatre, Sherman, Utilita Arena, Porter’s and selected Students’ Union shows all host comedy, but age guidance can be 14+, 16+ or 18+ depending on content.
Comedy with teens: do not use the venue alone as your guide. Read the comedian/show age guidance and content notes.
Outdoor Theatre & Summer Shows
Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival
Sophia Gardens · summer
An annual open-air theatre festival with plays, musicals and family productions. Check the current FAQ, Hynt information and wet-weather policy before travelling.
Cardiff Castle / DEPOT Live
City centre · summer concerts
A major outdoor live-music series that can work well for older teens when the artist and age rules suit.
Blackweir Fields
Bute Park · summer concerts
Expect large crowds, road closures and festival-style access planning.
Accessible & Relaxed Performances
Hynt
Hynt is Wales’s national access scheme. Eligible members can receive a free ticket for a personal assistant or carer at participating theatres and arts centres. Check that the specific venue participates and book through its stated access route.
Wales Millennium Centre Access
The source guide highlights wheelchair access, assistance dogs, Hynt companion tickets, accessible performances, a Changing Places toilet, pre-bookable disabled parking, wheelchair spaces, a visual story and a quiet room.
Sherman Theatre Accessible Performances
Sherman marks shows by access type, including BSL, relaxed, captioned and audio-described performances.
New Theatre Cardiff Access
Access information includes Hynt, wheelchair information, visual stories and accessible performance details.
Utilita Arena Live Access
Accessible ticketing, companion/carer tickets subject to allocation, step-free routes and accessible toilets are highlighted in the source guide.
Important: if a seated access space is essential, do not buy a standard standing ticket hoping it can be changed on the day.
First Theatre Trip Checklist
- Check the recommended age, not only whether children are technically admitted.
- Look at running time and whether there is an interval.
- For preschoolers, daytime shows around 45–70 minutes can be easier than evening productions.
- Choose an aisle seat if your child may need a toilet break or quick exit.
- Ask whether booster seats are available and whether buggies must be left elsewhere.
- Explain beforehand that lights may dim and there may be applause, music, smoke or loud effects.
- Bring ear defenders if useful, subject to venue bag rules.
- Arrive early enough to find toilets and seats without rushing.
- Tell children it is okay to leave if they need to.
- If sensory needs are significant, look for a relaxed performance, visual story or quiet space.
Taking Children & Teens to Gigs
- Check the exact age restriction on the event, ticket type and standing/seated area.
- If the event says “under 16s accompanied”, check the required age of the accompanying adult.
- For a first gig, seated tickets are often easier than general-admission standing.
- Consider sight lines, especially for shorter teens on a flat standing floor.
- Agree a meeting point in case phones lose signal or battery.
- Take hearing protection seriously.
- Check bag size, water, medication and re-entry rules before leaving home.
- For outdoor shows, plan weather, footwear, transport home and road closures.
- If accessibility support is required, use the official access process early because allocations can sell out.
Saving Money on Tickets
- Check family prices and child concessions rather than assuming every seat costs the same.
- Look at weekday performances, previews and matinees.
- RWCMD student and smaller-scale performances can be a lower-cost way to see high-quality live work.
- Join venue mailing lists for presales and occasional offers, but compare final prices including fees.
- Check official venue box offices before resale sites.
- If you need a companion ticket, check Hynt or the venue’s access scheme before paying for two full-price seats.
- Watch for free cultural programmes, public-space performances and community events.
